Hosting Information

The premise of the Jamborees is two fold: To provide a positive, enjoyable experience for all Initiation players, as well as an educational opportunity for parents. In meeting the first objective, a detailed on-ice and off-ice curriculum has been developed for players.

The off-ice activities include stations dealing with various topics such as Self-Esteem, History of Hockey, Safety, as well as low-organized games. At the same time, parents participate in practical workshop based on three topics including Role of the Coach, Role of the Hockey Parent, and an information session about the Initiation Program.

These sessions are designed to provide entry-level hockey parents with thoughtful and insightful sessions that can help lead them toward positive contributions to the game of hockey in years to come. The on-ice session for the players focuses on the development of fundamental skills through the fun-based approach to learning consistent with Initiation Program objectives.

The SHA would like to provide any Minor Hockey Association with the opportunity to host a Source for Sports Initiation Jamboree. The SHA feels that with Minor Associations involvement in a Jamboree, there would be an increase player's enjoyment of the game, while also increasing the education of the parents and coaches.

The parent's session is an extremely important aspect of the program. Therefore, the requirement placed on attendance is that at least one parent attend for each child in the Jamboree.

Benefits of the Program

The benefits in hosting an Initiation Program "Fair Play" Jamboree are numerous for everyone involved.

  • The fair play jamboree is an excellent way to promote the game and the minor hockey association in general.
  • The parents will get an understanding for the goals of the Initiation Program; they will also be given the opportunity to learn what their role as parents is with the team, which might prevent future problems for your association down the road.
  • Parents are not only introduced to how the Initiation Program works but why it is run the way it is as well, rational is provided for the format that has been established for this valuable program.
  • This is also an excellent opportunity for coaches to be able to see, learn and work with certified SHA instructors. This one day session alone will help your coaches understand the foundation that needs to be taught so that these young players will be able to continue having fun playing hockey.
  • There is also the possibility to have your local elite team take part by doing a class room session or having a couple guy's / girl's talk about their minor hockey experiences. This would be an excellent way to showcase the youth in your community association.
