Memorandum

April 7, 2010

The Saskatchewan Hockey Association announces that the Sask First Midget Summer Camp top 68 will not be held this upcoming July 2010.  Based upon feedback from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Saskatchewan Midget AAA League the consensus is that the players that will be invited to attend Summer Camp have already been sufficiently evaluated.  These players will have been evaluated during the current season, Sask First Zone camps and at the Sask First Midget Tournament (Saskatchewan Winter Games).  The majority of these players will have either been listed or have had invites to attend SJHL or AAA spring camps.

Saskatchewan Hockey Association still values the Midget Sask First program as one of our showcase programs for players of this age group, therefore the Midget Sask First Program will continue with the exception of summer camp.

Midget Zone Camps for the 2010/11 season for players born 1993, 94 & 95 will be held February 25-27, 2011 and the Midget Sask First Tournament will be held March 25-27, 2011.

Introduction

In 1997/98 the SHA introduced the Sask First Midget Program that participated in the Saskatchewan Winter Games held in Nipawin. The program is open to all midget aged players in the Province who are not registered with a Midget AAA, Junior A, B or C Team. The program follows the Sask First Bantam Program format whereby players are evaluated at a zone camp in hopes of making the zone team that competes annually at an evaluation tournament.

The program has proven to be an overwhelming success in the province with many positives arising for both the players involved and for the game of Midget hockey in general. Beginning in the 2006 season, the SHA has established a summer camp for this program as well. The top sixty-eight players (thirty-six forwards, twenty four defenseman, and eight goaltenders) will be invited to a summer evaluation camp where the players will be given another opportunity to display their talents to prospective Midget AAA and Junior teams. The Sask First Midget Program is a part of the SaskatchewanWinter Games every fourth season with the SHA hosting the evaluation tournament annually in the non-Saskatchewan Winter Games years.
